Bekasi, March 3rd, 2026 – To support the advancement of analytical capabilities in environmental laboratories, PT Sentral Lab Genetik collaborated with UPTD Laboratorium Lingkungan Kota Bekasi to host an online webinar and workshop entitled “Application of Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS) for Heavy Metal Analysis in Environmental Laboratories.” The event was designed to provide participants with practical insights into the application of Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS) for heavy metal analysis, covering both analytical methodologies used in environmental laboratories and the fundamental principles behind the operation of the instrument.
Water Analysis Using AAS in Environmental Laboratories
The webinar opened with a presentation by Cahyo Ambuko, S.Si., a Chemical Analyst from UPTD Laboratorium Lingkungan Kota Bekasi. In his presentation titled “Water Analysis Using AAS in Environmental Laboratories,” he discussed the key stages involved in conducting heavy metal analysis using AAS.
The session began with an overview of the analytical methods and measurement parameters commonly applied in environmental water testing. He also highlighted proper environmental water sampling procedures to ensure that collected samples accurately represent actual environmental conditions.
Participants were further introduced to the importance of method verification, which ensures that the analytical procedures used meet the required standards for accuracy and reliability. In addition, the session covered the preparation steps prior to analysis, including environmental water sample preparation, preparation of standard solutions, and blank solutions. These steps are essential in AAS analysis as they directly influence the accuracy and precision of analytical results. The session concluded with an explanation of the analytical output generated from AAS measurements and how the resulting data can be interpreted in the context of environmental monitoring and testing.
AAS Working Principles and Instrument Demonstration

The webinar continued with a presentation by Azizah Zelia Kusumo, S.Si., Application Specialist at PT Sentral Lab Genetik. During this session, participants gained deeper insight into the Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS), including its fundamental working principles and key operational aspects.
The presentation explained how AAS works by measuring the absorption of radiation by free atoms to determine the concentration of metallic elements in a sample. Participants were also introduced to the main components of the AAS instrument and their respective roles in the analytical process. In addition, the session highlighted the differences between several AAS techniques, including Flame AAS, commonly used for analyzing elements at relatively higher concentrations; Graphite Furnace AAS, which offers higher sensitivity for trace-level analysis; and Hydride Generator AAS, used for specific elements capable of forming hydrides.
To provide a more practical perspective, the session also featured a live demonstration of the AAS instrument using the AA-1800C Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer from MacyLab Instruments, equipped with a flame atomizer, where a simulation of copper (Cu) standard solution measurement was performed.
Acknowledging Collaboration and Participation
We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to all participants for their active participation and enthusiasm throughout the webinar and workshop. We also would like to express our gratitude to UPTD Laboratorium Lingkungan Kota Bekasi for the valuable collaboration and support in making this event possible.
We hope this event has provided valuable insights and practical knowledge that can support participants in strengthening their analytical capabilities, particularly in heavy metal analysis using AAS. We also hope this workshop serves as a meaningful platform for knowledge sharing and continued collaboration among laboratory professionals.
