Karawang, May 7 2025 — Balai Layanan Usaha Produksi Perikanan Budidaya (BLUPPB) Karawang once again became the focal point for aquaculture stakeholders with the recent seminar titled “Pathogen Detection in Penaeus vannamei through Molecular Testing Approaches.” The event was a collaborative initiative between BLUPPB Karawang, PT. Sentral Lab Genetik, and PT. Vazyme Biotech Indonesia, featuring three expert speakers in the field.
In addition to the in-person seminar, the event also featured a webinar (online session) and a hands-on workshop, which were actively attended by participants from various backgrounds including shrimp farmers, laboratory technicians, researchers, and government institutions. The event aimed to raise awareness and enhance technical capacity in early and accurate pathogen detection using advanced molecular diagnostics.
This seminar and workshop aimed to raise awareness and enhance technical capacity among shrimp farmers for early and accurate detection of shrimp pathogens using advanced molecular diagnostics.
Disease and Pest Trends Around the Cultivation Area
The first session was delivered by Atri Triana, Senior Aquaculture Analyst at BLUPPB Karawang. In her presentation, Atri highlighted the growing complexity of disease outbreaks in shrimp farming areas around Karawang and its surroundings. “Diseases such as White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV), Infectious Myonecrosis Virus (IMNV), and Early Mortality Syndrome (EMS) are increasingly prevalent, causing significant losses for shrimp farmers,” she explained. Atri also emphasized the importance of strengthening biosecurity systems and maintaining strict environmental monitoring in cultivation zones.
Pathogen Detection Using qFYR Real-Time PCR
The second speaker, Mutia Balqis, Application Manager at PT. Sentral Lab Genetik, introduced the qFYR Real-Time PCR technology from Nippon Genetics Europe, which is increasingly used for molecular detection of Penaeus vannamei pathogens. “With high sensitivity and fast response time, this method enables specific identification of pathogens within hours,” she stated. Mutia also presented field results demonstrating the effectiveness of the qFYR platform in detecting a wide range of pathogens, even in early-stage infections.
Comprehensive Shrimp Disease Detection with Vazyme PCR Kits
The final session featured Zico Arman, International Technical Support Specialist at PT. Vazyme Biotech Indonesia. He showcased Vazyme’s PCR diagnostic kits designed for comprehensive pathogen detection in shrimp. “Vazyme’s PCR kits are formulated to detect multiple major shrimp pathogens such as AHPND, EHP, and TSV simultaneously,” Zico explained. He further added that these kits have been widely adopted by laboratories across Southeast Asia for their reliability and precision in supporting effective disease management strategies.
Impact and Commitment
We would like to express our heartfelt appreciation to everyone who made this event a success. Thank you to all participants, speakers, and partners for your active involvement and genuine enthusiasm throughout the seminar, webinar, and workshop. This collaborative effort not only strengthened the synergy between shrimp health stakeholders and biotechnology solution providers, but also marked an important step toward a more sustainable and innovation-driven aquaculture industry in Indonesia. With continued support and shared commitment, we believe this momentum will lead to lasting improvements in shrimp disease diagnostics and overall aquatic health.
